Description:  After years of working on the RR, I dont want anything to do with a scanner and, so, take my chances. I really wanted a good shot at Kootenai Falls and sat and sat as the shadows got longer. It is a beautiful spot, but where are the trains? I had miles to go and had given up when this westbound rack train whistled - so its a grab shot and on my list of places to visit in the future.

Title:  Just right
Description:  I rode from Sandpoint, ID (huge run of trains after dark) over to Rock Island, WA to see the trestle within a trestle but came up snake eyes on trains. So I headed for the Columbia gorge around Wishram and spent the night at one of the better motel bargains - Dintys for some $42 a night, clean and right near the UP. Next morning I am sipping coffee, marveling at how good the lighting is for a train, if one were to show. Voila! here comes UP 7353 East to start off a good morning of activity.

Description:  I thought the forecast suggested a break in the weather, climbed on the Harley and headed east. Arriving in Cassandra, I found the Railroad Overlook Motel - if not fancy - clean and comfortable. But the moonlit night had ill portents with lightning in the distance. Come Thursday morning rain was dripping from the gutters as I peered out from between the drapes. As the saying goes, "wherever you go, there you are", and so I unfolded the rain suit and made the best of it. Heres one of the few trains NS runs on the Pittsburgh line - a paltry shadow of former CR and PRR traffic levels.

At long last
Title:  At long last
Description:  It is getting quite overgrown along the right of way at Mapleton making a shot with the signal bridge impossible from much of a distance. Eventually that will not matter as the remaining signal bridges are on borrowed time now. After patiently waiting with ears at attention (they sneak up pretty quick here) a telltale rumble announced the approach of an eastbound and, enjoyably, a manifest at that! Here the 9544 scoots through the sweeping curve and down the valley toward Jacks Narrows.
