Coming and going at Thompsontown, Part II |
Description: |
NS 9636 at a popular viewpoint. There was once an ornate steel trestle carrying PA Route 333 over the Juniata here; now replaced with a concrete slab. It would have been a great time to catch a westbound. |

Seriously trainfked |
Description: |
There was a westbound manifest moving up the mountain. From here, you can hear it way down in the valley around MP240 working upgrade and, after awhile, whistling for the sightseers at Horseshoe Curve. Now, the eastward signal for No.1 track had been standing at clear for awhile but, wouldnt you know (why dont apostrophes work on this site?), just as the westbound and my presumed catch of the day is getting closer, the sun is right, the leaves are lovely and all is right with the world.....an eastbound manifest shows. There cannot be more than a bare handful a day! As the eastbound consist rumbles past, the westbound passes on an inside track and that is that! As Dean Martin sang, "Aint that a kick in the head?" |

Something for everyone |
Description: |
You see some movement off by the distant horizon, catch a glimpse of a headlight, see a consist snaking down onto the high plains and then it disappears. A short while later the locomotive pokes over the swell in the landscape and bears down upon your vantage point. This eastbound manifest at Diablo may not have a KCS Belle, but the current-day "big four" are represented in this wild power consist. |

NS 9335 |
Description: |
NS 2652 and 9335 bring ore loads east! Until the mid-90s, and typical during PRR/PC/early CR days, iron ore still ran west frequently when the mills were still thriving. As many as five or six loaded trains a day headed inland from the ports of Philadelphia, Fairless or Baltimore when ships arrived; with 150-220 car empties returning to be loaded - often jenny hoppers with their machine gun-like cadence over the rail joints. Nowadays, like the economy in general, everything seems backwards. Old "naught" track doesnt seem long for existence given the accumulating rust. |

Fair weather friend at Forge |
Description: |
NS 9377 slips into Spruce Creek valley past a point that was once known as Forge interlocking. A block station was situated on the north (opposite) side of the tracks and here the narrow, triple-track segment through the valley expanded to a four-track main once more. Of course, now two mains are adequate for what business is left on this route. |

At long last |
Description: |
It is getting quite overgrown along the right of way at Mapleton making a shot with the signal bridge impossible from much of a distance. Eventually that will not matter as the remaining signal bridges are on borrowed time now. After patiently waiting with ears at attention (they sneak up pretty quick here) a telltale rumble announced the approach of an eastbound and, enjoyably, a manifest at that! Here the 9544 scoots through the sweeping curve and down the valley toward Jacks Narrows. |

Not a good picture? |
Description: |
This picture has problems - blurred, overcast, etc. Yet there is something about it that draws me. It has soul. When I look at this outfit coming out of Spruce Creek valley and pouring on the power as it heads into Barre straight line, I think of trios of F-7s hauling a redball SW-10 through here in Pennsy days with consist bouncing over the railjoints and springs squealing; of the tuscan red varnish with E units, sharp sounding horns and melodious EMD engines and, even today, the raw surge of power and thrill of a passing freight train in a sense of urgency to reach its next destination. After it is gone, only the sound of a barking dog will disturb the silence of this rural town. |
