After leaving the valley of the Snake River at Rock Island, OR, UPs La Grande Subdivision cuts northwestward with some steep grades over the Blue Mountains to reach the Columbia River valley. Here UP 5604 (with UP 5612 on the rear) ascends the first major climb on its path across the mountains at Oxman.
