Title:  More endangered species
Description:  The former C&O in Ohio is a bastion for that roads unique signal system - a system that seemed to place signals in profusion. I traveled by night from Magnolia, WV to Vaunces, OH with the hope of photographing some of C&Os classic signals, however, there was a strong front moving in and, although mild, the skies were overcast. CSX 5119 has empty coal cars returning to the Appalachian mines.

Making the best of it
Title:  Making the best of it
Description:  The impressive Columbia River gorge has plenty of rail activity on both sides of the river. Aside from the obvious benefit of such traffic density, it can be frustrating when waiting upon activity on one side of the river to view what one is missing across the water. Such is the case at Biggs, OR as I wait for approaching UP traffic as an SD-70MAC heads a nice eastbound BNSF manifest cruising up the valley. But it is still a pretty sight.

Description:  The westbound never stops but slowly creeps up the main and after the empty train with its DPU power has cleared the switch, the searchlight flicks to green and the load begins to accelerate into the grade. A good example of why MRL extended the siding about half a mile in 2008.

Something for everyone
Title:  Something for everyone
Description:  You see some movement off by the distant horizon, catch a glimpse of a headlight, see a consist snaking down onto the high plains and then it disappears. A short while later the locomotive pokes over the swell in the landscape and bears down upon your vantage point. This eastbound manifest at Diablo may not have a KCS Belle, but the current-day "big four" are represented in this wild power consist.
